Life has a habit of quietly rearranging itself when it knows better than you do. In 2019, it decided that a hospital rota, a handful of unexpected decisions, and a very specific ward in Devon would be enough to change everything.
Life has a habit of quietly rearranging itself when it knows better than you do. In 2019, it decided that a hospital rota, a handful of unexpected decisions, and a very specific ward in Devon would be enough to change everything.

At the time, Alok was a first-year junior doctor in Torbay, with no idea where his second year would take him. When the opportunity came up to move to Plymouth for a year of ophthalmology, haematology, and general practice, he took it without much thought. Abbie, meanwhile, was already there, although neither of them knew yet how significant that decision would turn out to be.
We met in December 2019 on Bracken, the haematology ward. What began as working side by side quickly became something that felt… different. Nothing dramatic, nothing rushed, just an unspoken sense that there was more there than the usual hospital camaraderie.

Doctors were told they wouldn’t be rotating because of a new virus spreading across the globe. Instead of moving on, Alok stayed on the same ward as Abbie for another four months. COVID bubble rules, vulnerable patients, and long shifts meant Abbie commuting between family and Alok's apartment wasn’t sustainable. So, in a move that most people would describe as bold (and others as slightly unhinged), Abbie moved in within four months of them dating.
It was the ultimate stress test, and it worked!
We discovered that we balanced each other perfectly: steadiness and spontaneity, logic and warmth, calm and laughter. What could have been overwhelming became the foundation for something solid and deeply happy.
The years that followed were joyous! Travel, career milestones, promotions, and big decisions. In May 2022, they bought their first home together. By 2025, with Alok finishing GP training and Abbie continuing to thrive in her career, life felt settled in the best possible way.
Before leaving for India, there was one more thing to do.
In June 2025, in Grindelwald, Switzerland, surrounded by mountains that felt as timeless as the decision itself, Alok asked Abbie to marry him. She said yes!
And now, here we are ready to celebrate not just a wedding, but the beautifully unexpected path that led us to it.
